    Visa Policy of Bahrain

Bahrain has an updated visa policy guided by its (Immigration & Residence) Act 1965. This law stipulates that foreigners coming to Bahrain must hold valid visas unless they are from a visa-on-arrival or visa-exempt country. Visitors from visa-on-arrival countries can travel to Bahrain without visas but will be issued visas at the port of entry before they are allowed in, while vise exempt visitors don't need visas to enter Bahrain. Travelers in both categories must have a valid passport that will remain valid beyond their departure dates and an onward or return flight ticket.

Another law that regulates the visa policy of the Kingdom of Bahrain is the Nationality Law. This law is important because it clearly defines who a Bahraini citizen is. The Nationality Law of 1963 did not recognize dual citizenship, so persons with Bahraini mothers or those who renounced their citizenship were not considered citizens. However, this law was updated in 2016 to allow dual nationality under strict guidelines. Furthermore, the King of Bahrain was granted discretionary powers to grant citizenship to persons not qualified under normal law.

Furthermore, the Immigration and Residence Act of 1964 formed the backbone of the new visa policy implemented in 2014, which allowed travelers from visa-free countries to apply for e-visas online before arriving in Bahrain. In light of this new policy, many more visas have been issued online than ever in the country's history. Then in 2016, Bahrain adopted a new policy of single and multiple entry visas that allowed eligible visitors up to 2 weeks – 90 days for single and multiple entry online visas.

Lastly, the visa policy of Bahrain does not require a visa from citizens of fellow Gulf Cooperation Council countries. Citizens from GCC countries may enter the Kingdom of Bahrain using valid national ID cards. The GCC countries are

    • Kuwait
    • Oman
    • Qatar
    • Saudi Arabia
    • United Arab Emirates

    Countries Eligible For e Visas:

There are two categories of e-Visa eligible countries. One group can enter Bahrain and stay for up to 30 days or 90 days, while the other category can stay for up to 14 days. Before you apply for a Bahraini e visa make sure your country is on the eligibility list.

Key Information About Bahrain e Visa

Apart from the key details espoused above for each visa, there are a few vital details you must have in mind before submitting our application for an electronic visa. Here are some of them.

Documentary Proof: Every e visa type has its own unique set of documents the applicant must submit before they can be cleared for a visit and issued the visa. Without tendering these documents, approval is near impossible. For instance, persons applying for a family e visa must show proof that they are related by blood to the Bahrani resident. In the case of married couples the visiting spouse must tender a marriage certificate to prove that they are married to the person they are visiting in the country.

Respect The Local Laws: Bahrain is a deeply Islamic and conservative society with the local laws heavily influencing the daily lives of the people. If you have decided to visit Bahrain, make sure you do your due diligence before you go. Obey your local laws of the land especially when you are in public.

Go With A Printed Copy: Before traveling, lay hold of a printed copy of your e visa and go with it. Although the e-visa can be generated at the airport using biometric screening, you should have a copy with you anytime you go out in case law enforcement officers ask you for your legal documents.

Not For Work: It is important to note that electronic visas are not for work but for leisure, business and transit. Even the busiest visa should not be confused for a work visa because it is not. If you must work in Bahrain make sure you apply for a work visa instead. Your employer can help you secure a work visa by liaising with the Bahraini authorities.

Leave Early: Avoid the temptation to stay beyond your e visa validity. Doing so will be a violation and you will be fined for every single day your overstay. For serious violations you may be deported and not allowed back into the country for a few years. To avoid such violations, set a timer on your phone to notify you when your visa expiration date is fast approaching.

Frequently Asked Questions about Bahrain visa

    • What is a sponsored visa?
A sponsored visa for the Kingdom of Bahrain is a visa that you can only obtain through an individual or company in Bahrain who acts as the sponsor. Work visas in Bahrain always require a sponsor, and so do visit visas for many nationalities. If you wish to visit a resident of the Kingdom of Bahrain, and do not qualify for an unsponsored visa, you may be sponsored by the resident (or by the employer of this person).
    • The Visit eVisa and GCC eVisa are unsponsored. What does this mean?
In contrast to a sponsored visa, an unsponsored visa is a visa that you can obtain yourself without the need for a sponsor. The Visit eVisa is an example of an unsponsored visa, but not every person is eligible for one of these.
    • What happens if my application is not approved?
In a small percentage of cases, we may not be able to evaluate and approve an application. In these cases, you should apply through the nearest Bahrain embassy.
    • If my e-Visa application is denied, will my fees be refunded?
The processing fee will not be refunded if the application is unsuccessful.
    • What can I do if I make a mistake in my application?
Once an application has been submitted and processed, and the card payment has been processed, if the application is rejected or cancelled, the visa fees will be refunded but the processing fees are not refundable. It is important that you are very careful when you type in your personal details.
    • How long is a visa valid for?
The eVisa is valid for 30 days from the approval date. Note that it is not possible to have more than one visa issued for a passport at a time. You must have used your eVisa, or it should have expired, before you can apply for another eVisa.
    • Can i extend my stay in destination country?
On a Visit eVisa you can stay in Bahrain for 14 days (but British and Irish nationals can stay up to 3 months). On a GCC eVisa you can stay for either 3 days or 7 days, depending on which eVisa you purchased.
    • How long can I stay in the destination country?
On a Visit eVisa you can stay for 14 days.
